Replace weirdos with homos and you have it right :)
Amen to that!
I have something I’d like to say about One Direction. They are so beautiful and talented and I love them so much.
We stop at Socs, our favorite ice cream place on the way back home. I get a Cherry slushy and Natalie gets a watermelon one. We sit at our picnic table, the one closest to the woods. We’ve been coming here since we were kids.
She stares at the birds flying through the trees. What ever she is keeping from me is big. She’s avoiding all eye contact, and hasn’t said 6 words to me the whole way home.
“Just tell me already, I know you’re dying to.”
“No!” She argues, still not looking at me.
“A hint then?” She takes another sip of her slushy, and starts to turn look at me.
“Fine. You’ll need a dress… and some nice shoes. Maybe you’ll even want to do your hair.”
“What? Ok now you really need to tell me.”
“Come on Raph don’t ruin the surprise! Just be ready by 8 tonight. Be dressed for let’s say… a date. Something you would have worn to go out with Ben.”
“Wait… I’m not going out with Ben right? Please say I’m not going out with Ben, I need to get over him.” She looks shocked.
“No of course not! I’m the one that keeps telling you to get over him remember?” I exhale. Oh thank goodness. I wouldn’t have been able to handle that tonight.
“Ok. Please you know how much I hate surprises. I need to know things ahead of time so that I can plan. You know should get that by now, we’ve only know each other for 12 years.” Shaking her head she sighs and looks at me.
“Dress for a date at Polcari’s, I’m not telling you anything else.” She takes the final slurp of her slushy and stands to throw it away. I stay sitting, sipping mine, and thinking about who she could have possibly seen at a mall 30 minutes away who would come here for a date… with me.
We get home and Natalie walks across the street to her house while I go to mine to get ready for this mystery date. We’ve lived next to each other since we were 5. Natalie moved in right across the street to 7 Arch Street, while I live in 6 Arch street. We live right next to our old elementary school, all that’s separating it is the schools sports fields.
It’s August in New England, which means it’s 90 and extremely humid. Rarely do we ever get heat without humidity, but when we do it’s beautiful. I shower and then get dressed. I decide to wear a nice white lacy summer dress. I search in my closet for nice shoes but come up dry. I grab the closest thing, which is a pair of black Toms. While I’m in my closet I grab a black cardigan just incase Polcari’s is cold, which it usually is.
I usually never wear makeup but I decide to put on light eyeliner some blush and some pale lip-gloss. I curl my mousy brown hair to make it look partway decent, and Pull back the front to keep it out of my equally mousy brown eyes.
Natalie is lucky, she has curly golden thick locks and dark blue eyes. It’s completely unfair.
It’s 7:45 by the time I’m done making myself looking half way presentable. I text Natalie to see if she’s ready to go. She is so I tell her to meet me at the car. I tell my parents (who are super relaxed about me going on dates) that I’ll be at Polcari’s with Natalie and a couple of blind dates. They laugh at Natalie who knows I hate surprises and tell me to have a good time. My dad pushes a 50 in my hand on the way out the door, even though I protest.
“Better safe than sorry sweetheart. Just have fun and be careful ok? Have a nice night.”
“Thanks daddy.” I grab my car keys off the hook and head out. Natalie is already there looking stunning in a simple black dress that fits her perfectly. Her hair is down and she has a pair of wedges on which evens our height.
“You look amazing!” She says as I unlock my door, I open it and press the button to unlock hers and we slide in.
“Thanks but you’re the one that looks amazing.” She flashes me a toothy grin but says nothing else to me until we’re pulling in to the parking lot 10 minutes later.
“So…” She starts. “The reason that I was at the signing for 5 hours… it wasn’t because it took me that long to get the CD signed. I stayed to meet them after, a few of us did.”
“Wait you met them? Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“Just wait.” She warns. “And um I told them how my best friend was crazy because she didn’t like them… and well they wanted to give you a chance to redeem yourself.”
“I’m confused.” She laughs and then looks at me like the crazed fangirl she is.
“They are our dates! They’re here!” I shake my head. No. No no no.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Nope!” She says shaking her head, smiling from ear to ear.
